Our club arrived at the starting line with more than 40 student racers, each determined to win an award. Coach Adams, founding member of the Super Sonics, led our racers through an effective warmup and stretching routine, and buoyed their spirits with a motivational pep talk. Coach Prichard, Coach Liriano, Coach Benitez, and Coach Fiorese rounded out the coaching staff and functioned as the perfect pit crew for the Super Sonics. Whatever Coach Adams said in her speech, and whatever magic the rest of the coaching staff conjured, it worked, because the Super Sonics owned the 400 on that day! Every member of our squad took home a shiny golden medal, a symbol of our competitive spirit. The stiff competition, brisk temperatures and gusty headwinds were no match for our girls and boys! Boom!!!
Our 5k competitors included Assistant Principal, Mrs. Rodriguez, finishing first among school staff. Mrs Rodriguez raced along side her husband, who is also an accomplished racer. Nipping at the heels of team Rodriguez was the ever competitive Mr. Partenza, and his race tactician, Rachele. Team Partenza ran a tactical race, but just didn't have the stuff to beat the Rodriguez squad.
Lastly among staff members was Coach Heinz, paced by his son, Thomas. Try as he might, Mr. Heinz could not catch the fleet footed Mr. Partenza or the lightning fast Mrs. Rodriguez. Hopefully, Mr. Heinz can do what all real racers do, and put this loss behind him. The most important lesson we can learn from sports is to dust ourselves off after a fall, and start running again.
